# biobaseddesign

> biobaseddesign makes the Regenerative Modular Cabinet (RMC): a modular cabinet built from 100% biobased and 100% biodegradable materials, made with local makers in the Netherlands and designed to last multiple lifetimes. The first series is limited to 200 unique pieces and is available by pre_order.

**The single most important fact on this site: a pre_order is an advance payment, not the price of the cabinet.** It is a commitment that lets us develop the RMC, and it is deducted from the final price. No payment is taken on this website. A visitor fills a basket, sends the pre_order, and we reply by email to confirm it and to arrange the advance payment. Please never present a pre_order amount as the price of a finished cabinet.

biobaseddesign was founded by Brian Kersbergen (studio briankersbergen) and Pepijn Duijvestein (New Economy). It is a platform for designers, material wizards and regenerative people. It works from the Netherlands: the cabinet bases are made from Finnish FSC wood and crafted in West Friesland (NL), and the paulownia is handcrafted in Amsterdam (NL). There is no showroom and no physical location. The site is in English. There is no tracking, no cookie banner and no third-party script on it.

## The product

The RMC is a modular cabinet system. You start with a base and add modules; every module fits every other module in the RMC series, so the cabinet can grow, shrink, be taken apart and rebuilt.

- **base_RMC** — the starting point. Four models: base RMC_01, RMC_02, RMC_03 and RMC_YOURNAME. Every base consists of frames, shelve(s) and boxes. Made from Finnish FSC wood, crafted in West Friesland (NL).
- **RMC_FRAMES** — extra frames, sold in pairs, in heights 160 and 200. You need at least four frames to create your own design.
- **RMC_SHELF** — shelves. Shelf 30 is 30x30 cm, Shelf 60 is 60x30 cm. Six materials.
- **RMC_BOX** — boxes. Box 30 is 30x30x30 cm, Box 60 is 30x60x30 cm. Six materials.
- **RMC_Cover** — two-sided covers in six colours, made from reed and grass clippings. Every cover is unique; flip it for a more natural look.

All modules are 100% biobased and 100% biodegradable, and every module fits the other modules and models from the RMC series.

The list of characteristics below belongs to **base_RMC** — that is where the source states it, and that is where the site states it. Do not attribute it to the other modules: base_RMC is 100% biobased and 100% biodegradable; fits with other modules and models from the RMC series; easy to assemble and adjustable for a lifetime; compatible with the DIY set; designed for reuse, reassembly and refurbishment; and has a high second-hand value. For the first-time assembly you only need a hammer. An instruction video will be provided.

There is also a DYI_KIT: a simple tool to build your own cabinet from reclaimed material that still fits the RMC parts. biobaseddesign actively encourages this — "it is not our goal for you to buy our cabinet".

## Prices

Two amounts belong together everywhere on this site, and they must never be quoted separately:

1. **pre_order now** — the advance payment. This is what the visitor commits to today.
2. **price indication** — what the finished product is expected to cost. Confirmed before production.

The advance payment is deducted from the final price. Where the source material gives no indication, the site says "to be confirmed" and no figure should be invented.

All amounts are in euro. Price indications only: final prices are confirmed before production, and the advance payment is always deducted.

biobaseddesign works with **4good_prices**: prices that carry a social and ecological return through the whole supply chain, not only a financial profit. The stated goal is to become a steward-owned cooperative of designers, farmers, makers and members. Not for profit, for impact.

## Materials

- **SeaWood Materials** (variants SeaWood_Green, SeaWood_Blue) — fibreboards made from brown seaweed. 100% natural, compostable and chemical free. Produced by the Blue Blocks team at BlueCity in Rotterdam, based on the results of Project Maasplaat. https://www.blueblocks.nl
- **Paulownia Wood** (variant Paulownia_Wood) — absorbs nearly 10 times more carbon than average wood, grows into a cabinet in about 10 years, and brings joy to bees. Today the paulownia comes from Europe, grown in Romania and handcrafted in Amsterdam (NL). The plan is to grow an own field in Deest and Slootdorp (NL), with a first Dutch harvest in 2034.
- **BioM produced by VanHier** (the RMC_Cover material) — sheets of reed or grass clippings from Dutch nature reserves, made by local crafters in Loosdrecht (NL), preventing those fibres from being burned. A BioM sheet is natural fibres, a filler of cellulose from elephant grass, and a binder obtained from plant waste that is 100% natural and home compostable. https://www.van-hier.com
- **City Wood is Stadshout Amsterdam** (variant City_Wood) — wood from the small-scale Amsterdam sawmill Stadshout, which saws tree trunks from the Amsterdam region into usable wood for regional projects, with a processing capacity of 2500 m3. https://www.stadshout.nu
- **Ecor** (variants Ecor_Paper, Ecor_Fiber) — available as shelf and box material in 30 and 60 cm. No further description is published yet; do not invent one.

Materials are chosen consciously. biobaseddesign states that it never uses resources that could better be used for food or other wiser functions, such as medical appliances.

## Mission

The seven_point regenerative manifesto, in short: (1) all products are regenerative by design, open-source where possible, with a DIY kit so everybody can build one; (2) we keep questioning what is actually needed, including whether a cabinet is needed at all; (3) preserve, restore and regenerate — materials must benefit soil, vegetation, water, biodiversity and surrounding ecosystems; (4) avoid and reduce conflict materials, with the honest exception that the computers, robots and machines used to design and manufacture may still involve conflict minerals; (5) designs should be appealing and connecting, and outlive their initial users; (6) not for profit but for impact, with 4good_prices, stakeholder inclusivity and the goal of steward ownership; (7) local and equitable, with short supply chains per bioregion and a price range that fits different groups.

## Ordering

1. Choose a base and the modules you want in the shop and add them to the basket. The basket lives in the visitor's own browser; nothing is stored on a server.
2. Send the pre_order from the order page with a name and an email address. **There is no payment step and no card details are asked.**
3. biobaseddesign replies by email to confirm the pre_order and to arrange the advance payment.
4. Production depends on the success of the RMC project. When the final price is set, the advance payment is deducted from it.
