A cabinet that lasts multiple lifetimes, built from regenerative_materials. It is a modular_system that can grow or shrink with you, which you can customize or redesign, exchange or keep. A cabinet that accompanies you on your life_journey.

How it works

  1. 1. Pick your base

    Start with a base of your liking, or combine bases. All bases are made from Finnish FSC wood and crafted in West Friesland (NL). Every base consists of frames, shelve(s) and boxes.

  2. 2. Draw out your dream creation

    Set it up as you prefer and experiment with various configurations. It is easy to adjust and customisable to your wishes.

  3. 3. Build and redesign as you are creating

    Add boxes, shelves, covers and extra frames whenever you need them. Take it apart, rebuild it, pass it on.

We believe you can harvest and build your own, so we provide a simple tool to do so. It is not our goal for you to buy our cabinet — we want you to first explore the possibilities of urban mine hunting, or to take another good look at your broken cabinet to see if there is any usable material ready to be used again.

That is what our DYI_KIT is for: a simple tool to make your own cabinet, accessible to our RMC parts. Start with your own and expand it with modules from our collection.

What is the Regenerative Modular Cabinet (RMC)?
The RMC is a modular cabinet built from 100% biobased materials. You start with a base — base RMC_01, RMC_02, RMC_03, or your own base RMC_YOURNAME — and every base consists of frames, shelve(s) and boxes. You can set it up as you prefer, combine bases, and experiment with various configurations. It is designed to last multiple lifetimes and to grow or shrink with you.
What is the RMC made of?
The bases are made from Finnish FSC wood and crafted in West Friesland (NL). Shelves and boxes come in six materials: SeaWood_Green and SeaWood_Blue (fibreboard from brown seaweed, made by Blue Blocks in BlueCity Rotterdam), City_Wood (from Stadshout, the small-scale sawmill in Amsterdam), Paulownia_Wood, Ecor_Paper and Ecor_Fiber. The covers are BioM sheets, made by VanHier in Loosdrecht from reed and grass clippings out of Dutch nature reserves.
Is it really 100% biobased and biodegradable?
Yes. All new materials produced through biobased_design are 100% biobased and 100% biodegradable, and they are selected because they benefit the soil, vegetation, water, biodiversity and surrounding ecosystems. We are open about one exception, and it is in our manifesto: the designs are created using computers, and the robots and machines that manufacture them may unfortunately still involve the use of conflict minerals and critical materials.
What are the sizes of the modules?
Box 30 is 30x30x30 cm and Box 60 is 30x60x30 cm. Shelf 30 is 30x30 cm and Shelf 60 is 60x30 cm. Covers come in 30 and 60. Frames are available in two heights and are sold in pairs; you need at least four frames to create your own design. The current heights are listed in the shop.
Do I need tools to assemble it?
For the first-time assembly you only need a hammer (and some fun patience). An instruction video will be provided. Because the cabinet is designed for reuse, reassembly and refurbishment, you can take it apart and rebuild it as often as you like.
Can I extend or change my cabinet later?
Yes — that is the point of a modular_system. Every module fits with the other modules and models from the RMC series, so you can add an extra box, some handy extra shelves, a cover, or extra frames (per pair) at any time. Modules are also compatible with the DIY set. The cabinet can grow or shrink with you, and it has a high second-hand value if you pass it on.
Can I build my own cabinet instead of buying one?
Yes, and we encourage it. It is not our goal for you to buy our cabinet. First explore the possibilities of urban mine hunting, or take another good look at your broken cabinet to see if there is any usable material ready to be used again.
